Caring for a heritage tree is as much about understanding its history and limitations as it is about performing any particular service. These trees have accumulated decades or centuries of structural development, wound response, and site adaptation — and they require an approach that works with that history rather than against it. Responsible stewardship starts with a thorough assessment of the tree’s current structural condition, including any internal decay that isn’t visible from the outside. It continues with thoughtful pruning — removing hazardous deadwood and addressing the most critical structural concerns without overcorrecting a tree whose form is the result of natural development over a long life. Soil care, root zone protection, and monitoring for pest and disease activity round out a program that extends the tree’s productive life without imposing interventions that stress a system already working near its limits. Heritage trees in Hillsborough deserve that level of considered attention.

Deferred tree maintenance compounds in ways that are worth understanding before the decision to wait becomes a more expensive one. Structural concerns that could have been addressed with targeted corrective pruning when first identified grow harder and more costly to manage with each year of additional growth. Deadwood that would have been a routine removal when small becomes a larger liability as the wood dries, becomes more brittle, and more prone to sudden failure. Pest and disease problems that are highly treatable in their early stages can progress to a point where meaningful intervention is no longer possible. Trees in Hillsborough’s humid Piedmont climate don’t pause their development while maintenance is delayed — they continue growing around their deficiencies, which generally makes those deficiencies harder and more expensive to address over time.

Our pricing reflects the actual scope of work involved on each specific property rather than a standardized rate applied across the board. The factors that most significantly affect cost are the size of the trees being worked on, the nature and extent of the work required, the accessibility of the site for equipment, the proximity of the work to structures and utilities, and whether the project includes stump grinding or debris removal. We provide written pricing before scheduling any work on a Hillsborough property — we do not show up and revise a number after the work is underway. If you would like to understand what a specific service will cost before committing, reaching out through lubbersandsons.com is the right starting point.

The Piedmont region of North Carolina presents a consistent set of biological threats to residential trees that we monitor closely. Oak wilt is one of the most serious — a fungal disease that can kill red oaks within weeks and spreads through root grafts and beetle vectors, making early identification and prompt action critical. The Emerald Ash Borer has been advancing through North Carolina and represents an ongoing existential threat to ash trees throughout the region. Bacterial leaf scorch — which affects oaks, maples, and sycamores among other species — causes progressive decline that is often misidentified as drought stress without professional evaluation. Hypoxylon canker is a fungal pathogen that capitalizes on stress and can cause rapid branch and stem death in susceptible hardwoods. Knowing what to look for in each species on your Hillsborough property, and responding quickly when something appears, makes a meaningful difference in outcomes.
