Soil Problems Under the Canopy: Why NC’s Clay Soil Can Be Hard on Trees

Give your trees the support they need with expert plant health care services from our team of professional arborists.
Plant health care (PHC) is the proactive, science-based approach to maintaining tree health and preventing problems before they arise. Effectively providing these services requires an intimate knowledge of our local tree species, soils, and climate conditions. That’s why it’s always important to work with a locally based team of professional arborists — like those at Lubbers & Sons Tree Care.
Our team understands the specific challenges our region presents, including:
Central North Carolina’s trees face a number of serious threats, including emerald ash borers, ambrosia beetles, and fungal pathogens like anthracnose. Early identification and treatment are critical to preventing widespread damage, and our arborists know exactly what to look for.
Central North Carolina’s dense red clay is notoriously poor at draining excess moisture, which can lead to root rot, nutrient deficiencies, and chronic stress in trees that aren’t well-adapted to these conditions. Our plant health care programs are designed to address these soil-related issues directly.
From prolonged summer droughts to late-season ice storms, Central North Carolina’s climate can place significant stress on even the healthiest trees. Proactive plant health care helps trees build the resilience they need to withstand these conditions and recover more quickly should damage occur.
We’ve been providing plant health care services across Central North Carolina since 2020, and we’d love to help you keep your trees healthy for years to come.
Lubbers & Sons Tree Care takes a different approach than many of the other tree-service companies operating in Central North Carolina. We measure success by the number of clients we help and trees we save rather than the number we remove.
In fact, when you trust the Lubbers & Sons Tree Care team, you’ll immediately notice our commitment to:
“Some of our plant health care services give homeowners and property managers the chance to support their trees proactively and help prevent pest and disease issues before they even occur.”

The cost of plant health care services in Central North Carolina varies significantly depending on the type of treatment required, the size and number of trees being treated, and the overall scope of the program. Individual treatments such as pest management or fertilization typically start at around $150, while comprehensive, year-round care programs may cost considerably more.
A few of the factors that will influence the total costs you’ll face include:
With that said, it’s important to keep in mind that proactive plant health care is almost always more affordable than the alternative. Addressing a pest infestation or disease early, before it has a chance to spread, can save you significant money compared to the cost of treating a severely affected tree or, worse, having it removed entirely.
